A few years ago when Radiohead was getting ready to release Hail to the Thief I remember reading that Thom York said it was going to be a “shagging album.” Then I remember buying it and thinking “I have heard music more conducive to shagging.”
If nothing else, Toro Y Moi has put out music that is consistently and incontrovertibly shaggable (that is you can shag to the music, not necessarily shag the music itself though his does conjure a funny mental image of a very frustrated John Mayer standing in front a giant speaker naked from the waist down.)
“Saturday Love” comes off Toro Y Moi’s latest EP Freaking Out released in September. Since his second album Underneath the Pine, project mastermind Chazwick Bundick has initiated a slow migration from Chillwave, the indie-pop niche that he helped carve out. This track continues along those same lines: the vocals are clearer and more present while the music is more straightforward and less loop-based. The song feels like the result of a three way DNA swap between Justice, Michael Jackson, and Technotronic. Truly sensual jams.
