If you’re not already keeping up with The AV Club‘s Undercover Series, you’re missing out. The format is as follows: AV Club staff and readers pick a list of songs, and a new band comes to the studio each week to pick one, play a cover of it, and it gets crossed off the list. Some are amazing, some not-so-much, but who doesn’t love a good cover? This holiday season, they’ve allowed bands to pick their own songs, and Peter Wolf Crier recently took to the studio to talk about swinger’s retreats and give their take on Wham’s “Last Christmas”, dialing down the original’s dance-pop in favor of slow-burn keyboard drones and falsetto vocals, perhaps a bit more fitting of the song’s somber lyrical themes. Also, Kyle Flater stares directly into your soul at the 2:54 mark, so keep your eyes peeled for that.
