Former Chippewa Valley resident Megafaun has released the first single from its forthcoming self-titled LP, due on Hometapes on September 20, along with the album’s artwork and tracklist.
“These Words,” is nearly a spotlight for the work of percussionist Joe Westerlund. The song hinges on his highly syncopated rhythm section, and features the noises he captured through field recordings on a recent trip to Bali, as well as in the band’s home state of North Carolina. Croaking frogs and singing bugs playfully add to the building plethora of sounds swelling behind the trio’s harmonized vocal melodies, as do electronic scratches and screeches, and moments of clarity are contrasted by those of destruction and clutter.
It’s less focused on guitar and banjo parts than Megafaun’s previous work has been, possibly signaling a small change for the group. We’ll be keeping close tabs on this one, so expect to hear more from Megafaun.
