Caveman describes their sound as “afro beat/new wave” on their MySpace page.  Accordingly, “Thankful” (one of two free tracks the band released to promote their brand new album) sounds like a dreamier, more melodic version of Talking Heads.  With the infectious pulse of the conga banging out tribal polyrhythm combined with the ritualistic repetition of the quasi-nonsensical phrase “Thankful all my friends with remorse,” you can almost see David Byrne jumping up in the air and wiggling those enormous padded shoulders.  Except in the case of “Thankful” this shoulder shaking vision occurs in slo-mo, and its surface shimmers and ripples with various ambient effects.  This excellent track achieves emotional depth, yet remains catchy and relaxing.  Caveman’s new album CoCo Beware was officially released as of November 1st.   To my knowledge it is the first record released this Fall to be named after a retired professional wrestler.  Check out the band and buy their album at their website.
