Megafaun - Bury The Square

Forget about objectivity for this one. Full disclosure: I love the Megafaun guys. Brad and Phil used to babysit me. Ok, that’s out of the way.

This album is a destroyer. Six songs, thirty-nine minutes. Of all the elements on Bury The Square, the pacing is what kills me the most. It’s a journey. Everybody knows it’s important to come out with your guns blazing, but “Find Your Mark” is breathtaking. The gorgeous vocal harmonies, for starters. The guitar tone. The beat that stumbles out of bed at 1:15. The final plea, “Don’t forget to write.” This band is a potential mind-blower.

“Where We Belong” is eleven minutes long. I’m in a weird place with this one. See, I know I’m not supposed to like songs that are longer than three minutes, because I’m a pop music guy. But this song is a brooder, a song that requires focus. I think that’s what I really want to say about Bury The Square. You can’t toss this disc on your iTunes and play it while writing an extended essay. Every time I listen to this album, my mind is set on nothing else for thirty-nine minutes. That’s what music is supposed to be like.
