Pictured: Mystery Palace aren’t Justin Timberlakes stylists, but they could be.
I saw Mystery Palace for the second time ever a couple of weeks ago, and was completely dumbstruck. I’m not usually a big fan of skinny-ass white guys playing electronica, but this was different. Their sheer mastery of every aspect of the genre is enough to get even the staunchest head-bobber to shake his groove thing. Wherever that groove thing may be.
One shouldn’t be surprised by Mystery Palace’s talent level, featuring Ryan Alcott on keyboards/programming/circuit bending and James Buckley (of Eau Claire Jazz fame) on bass. Alcott writes and records under the name food team, and previously was in pop-weird supergroup, 12 Rods. Alcott plays his unconventional instruments with the talent and dedication of a virtuoso. It’s really quite a sight to see.
Buckley and drummer, Joey Van Phillips are the driving force of the band. Phillips plays with the soul of a human, but with the intense, blinding speed of a robot. The recording is good, but live it seems unreal. Buckley is funky as hell. For real.
Anyway, check it out. You might like it. I’m putting up the very European, “Two way Stranger” and the less Euro (but still amazing) “Nascar Survivor” Check out the drumtastic goodness of the first track. Trust me.
