Thao Nguyen - We Brave Bee Stings and All

Sometimes you get behind the meanings of songs without knowing what they are. It’s just a feeling that the voice sounds important, but for some reason you can’t quite pick up on the words. It’s sort of like the ‘funny numbers,’ game that politicians play when they stand at podiums and yell out various facts and/or promises, and often times the candidate with the most likable voice is the one we believe.

I feel this way when Thao Nguyen sings Swimming Pools. The song is so fast paced and heated, bordering if not reaching angry, that all I catch is the mess of banjos and guitars and random parts of phrases. “Our bodies…granddaughters…cannonball…chemicals…little girls.” Maybe it’s a song about youth or womanhood, something meaningful probably, but it really doesn’t matter to me at all. Eventually I’ll regurgitate the words and sing along with her, but I doubt I’ll ever slow the song down enough to analyze its meaning.

Thao Nguyen - Swimming Pools

I’d call Thao two parts Land of Talk and a dose of Laura Veirs, top with some bluegrass influences and deep fry for 45 minutes.
