The Low Lows - Shining Violence

Pictured: No, man. It’s not that bad. I hardly even noticed that your skull’s cracked open and your eye looks like an 8-ball.

The Low Lows put a salty taste in my mouth. It’s not necessarily of table salt, it’s more like the bitter aftertaste of swimming in an ocean. Parker Noon’s voice really does it for me. His nasally, overdramatic squalling cuts through the low-fi love songs on Shining Violence a bit sharply on the first few tries, but repeat listens help put it in place.

Three of the band’s members are from Parker + Lily, which gained significant recognition before breaking up because of a fall out in Noon’s romantic relationship with co-songwriter Lily Wolfe. In an article in Time Out, an entertainment magazine in New York, Wolfe said, “artistically, I trust Parker beyond anyone, but he’s a total dick.” The Low Lows are named after Parker + Lily’s final album, which was supposed to be the last installment in a discography of work that depicted their relationship. Something about this new album tells me Parker’s had a rough time with the closure.

The Low Lows - Modern Romance

The album’s best, possibly also the most desperate, Modern Romance.
