When I was in 7th grade, I played guitar in a Jimmy Eat World cover band. We played “The Middle”. I will never forget what it felt like to have my entire middle school screaming my name, demanding an encore. To this day, I don’t think a group of people has ever been that excited about me throwing my hand at a guitar and shouting into a microphone. That might be a pretty big factor in my ongoing obsession with everything these guys have put out since. Or maybe everything this band has put out is just really good?
The new album kicks off with that signature loud guitar strumming, and then I think somebody says “Stay.” Anyway that’s what I want somebody to say just before the band explodes and I’m taken back to 7th grade, when getting a girlfriend was so easy. The album is incredible. Huge choruses, cheesy lyrics, thundering drums, dancey grooves. No matter what you’re looking for, it’s all here.
The artwork kind of looks like a vagina, though.

I love that JEW has got new stuff. No way will they ever get back to “The Middle”, but it’s good escapist music. Easy to listen to, and easy to get taken back in time with.
