Pictured: And now Mr. Miller will lead us as we join our voices in singing A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.
My friend Peter is We Are The Willows. He also sings and plays for the indie-rock band Red Fox Grey Fox in Minneapolis, but there’s something pretty special about a solo project when it comes from a friend. You know it’s him in the songs, his ideas and his fingers doing the work. He sat in his bedroom with a guitar and scribbled words in a notebook along to clumsy little melodies, and as he spent more time with them, the songs became clearer and the melodies tightened. A lot of time and thought were put into the songs, what the lyrics meant and whether or not the right feelings were coming out of the music. And when Peter went into the studio he brought with him the instruments he thought he’d need to put it all together. An acoustic guitar as the base, with subtle accordion and xylophone parts as support, and Peter’s impossibly passionate, high pitched vocals over top of it all.
At the end of the Bravery EP, I think my favorite thought is that it only says exactly what Peter wants it to say, feels the way he feels, and if someone pays enough attention they can come away with that same feeling. With this I send my many, many congratulations and warm wishes.
