The Curtains - Calamity

Pictued: The Curtains are ready for casual Friday. Everyday!

I’m not a big Deerhoof guy. Sorry, I know they’re supposed to be really, really brilliant and awesome, but it ain’t me. Naw, naw, naw it ain’t fer me. So you can imagine my surprise when I found that Chris Cohen (of Deerhoof fame) had created a nice lil’ pop cd that I could bop my philistine head to. Anyway, it’s put out by Asthmatic Kitty (Sufjan Stevens) so it once again knocks its cred quotient up into the uper-echelons of cool/hip.

Calamity is a fairly cohesive record. I say, “fairly” because once in awhile Cohen still relies on the ole’ Deerhoof freak out to add some depth to songs. I emphasize that it’s only once in a great while. For the most part, this has nothing to do with Deerhoof (which is probably why I keep saying Deerhoof. Deerhoof, Deerhoof, Deerhoof.) Cohen’s vocals are high and sweet, and they use acoustic guitar (not in a shitty way) and old piano (not in a trite way) to make music that it came out of some weird kid’s album from the sixties.

I’m really not doing this justice at all, but check out “Go Lucky”. It is pretty typical of the album, and it’s weird and beautiful and just great. Listen for neat piano, Cohen’s whisper thin voice, and a lil’ guitar noodeling at the end.
