Do Make Say Think - In Mind

Pictured:  Do Make Say Think have one guitar to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them.

Do Make Say Think is a band from some of the guys who brought you Broken Social Scene.  They play instrumental music, but not the kind that makes you throw up in elevators.  It’s more the kind of music that is featured in movies.  The sort of movies that would be called Syriana, or The Corporation.  They were on Constellation Records for awhile (Godspeed You!  Black Emperor), but don’t think utterly depressing, epic music with a violin.  Think inspirational, epic music with a violin

They formed ten years ago.  They used to never have lyrics, but now they have some once in awhile.  There’s an otherworldlyness to their music that lends itself to hyperbole.  I’m not going to do that though, try and get a hyperbolic word out of me.  OK, here’s one, Heavenly.  That’s all you’re going to get.

“In Mind” is one of the shorter tracks off of DMST’s newest album, “You, You’re a History in Rust” (most clock in at 5 minutes or longer.)  It builds trombones, banjo, and guitar over the top of a rollicking drum beat.  DMST’s trademark “super loud bass” is ever present, but where this differs from old DMST is that you finally get the pay off you want.  When everyone in the band sings, “When you die, you’ll have to leave everyone behind” it isn’t trite, and it isn’t forced.  It’s just like the song’s moral, inevitable.
