Pictured: The Maccabees, young, angry, and all about pepto-bismol?
The Maccabees are another fast, dance-rock band from the UK. They write catchy choruses, and play fast-guitars and drums with lots of high-hat. It’s sort of new wave + Devo + an Isaac Brock stand in. Here’s the thing, where I can’t stand Isaac Brock, because of his moody, self-absorbed lyrics, The Maccabees go in completely the opposite direction.
Basically every song on 2007’s, “Colour It In” is about hanging out with your friends, and being an idiot. It’s refreshing to have a band of 19 year olds who don’t tell me that they have the secret to the universe in their songs, who don’t try to get me to donate to Live Aid every other track. Anyway, these guys are on tour with Bloc Party, and that’s a pretty good idea of the audience they are shooting for. Think a culturally and socially diverse crowd in too-tight-shirts and stylish eyewear. If you dropped out of law school, this could be your next party album.
Anyway, the stand out track is, “Latchmere” a breakneck dance rock song that is about some hangout in the UK that “has a wave machine!” Try not to dance, you magnificent bastard.
