Corinne Bailey Rae - Munich (Editors cover)

Pictured:  A Match made in heaven.

Why is British pop music so much better than American pop music?  From Amy Winehouse to Lilly Allen, it seems like our neighbors across the pond are willing to take bigger and better risks with what they listen to.  Consequently, their music is smarter, catchier, and has much more staying power.

Corinne Bailey Rae is the latest (and best) product of the neo-soul-jazz-pop movement that has gripped both nations.  Her voice is strong, her guitar playing is subtle, and she looks like, well, see the above picture.  Her single, “Put Your Records On” is currently such a big hit that even local crap music promoters, Z-100 have seen fit to put on the radio.  Sorry, Jerry Jordan, it’s true.

Remember all of three posts ago when I talked about Editors, and how they’re great and whatever.  Well, this is their first single off of their last cd.  Munich.  It’s another broody dance number (see below.)

So now, take out all the weird, white guy, British angst.  Add one amazing soul singer, one jazz guitar, and a microphone, and  you get this.  Enjoy it, I know it’s making it on every summer mix that I make.

Also, I don’t know if I’ll get around to reviewing Rae’s actual album, but needless to say, it is as amazing as any of this.  Please, please, please do yourself a favor and listen and love.
