There have maybe been hundreds, probably thousands of songs written about growing up. The pains and excitement of high school, awkward first dates, getting picked last for the kickball team in the second grade even though I was way better than Ashley and she got picked before me. I mean, yeah, I was small, I never kicked the ball over the fence or anything, but I was pretty quick, and my defense was impenetrable. Ashley’s defense sucked. Just sucked.
But, back to the point at hand here, how many bands have devoted entire albums to the theme of growing up? Very few, if any, and they were probably horrible and weak. Horrible and weak like Ashley‘s throwing arm. Hell yeah, good one Andy.
Minneapolis’ One for the Team, however, has made such an album, and is not horrible and weak at all.
“Good Boys Don’t Make Noise,” is the band’s new ten song CD on Afternoon Records, and is absolutely full of great rock and roll. Every single song on the album is upbeat, fueled by light, jangling guitars and straight forward drum beats. The songs hardly rely on singer and songwriter Ian Anderson, instead they swirl around him and highlight all of his positively catchy, nasally vocal parts.
This is really, truly indie rock, as much as a band can be, and it’s completely refreshing to hear an album like Good Boys Don‘t Make Noise. It’s rare that I can take a first listen to an entire album from a rock band I’ve never heard before and come away enjoying it as much as I did this CD. So, how’s that for positive press? Ehh?
The mp3 is the album’s title track, “Good Boys Don’t Make Noise.” It is good. You will most likely like it.
If you’re in the Eau Claire area, be absolutely sure to catch these guys on Thursday, June 14th at The Nucleus!! And my defense is still as impenetrable as ever, by the way. Possibly even better now.
