In the best way possible, Wheat should get some considerable airplay on college radio programs throughout America with their new release. Not like on the horrible stations either, for the most part I mean the “good” ones.
“Everyday I Said a Prayer for Kathy and Made a One Inch Square,” is sort of like a buffer between Wheat’s previous efforts. They’ve been criticized on one album for being too sharply poppy and cheesy, and then criticized yet again on the next for being too distant and abstract to keep listeners interested. So this time the band found a way to blend its pop with abstraction, and Everyday sounds both pleasing and smart.
Soft, twanging guitars mix with keyboards to create a lot of semi-inspirational parts, but Wheat manages to keep its cool throughout the album. It sort of says, “yeah, we want you to take us super seriously in the way that we can both rock your socks off and make you feel all of your little feelings, but we weren’t really trying. It just kinda happened. Ain’t it sweet?”
And it is sweet, it really is. Whether you’re going into your first semester as a college freshman, looking to smarten up your musical library, or you’ve just graduated, and you’re looking for a bit of refreshment from a whole four years of trying to come off smarter than you really are, this album will get the job done.
“I Had Angels Watching Over Me,” is the track you just can’t get out of your head. So, have fun with that, pupils.
