Field Music - Tones of Town

Pictured:  Field Music is as pale, skinny, and British as you’d expect.

Field Music are a band that is content to experiment in areas of music that have been experimented in since the late 70s.  That’s not to say that their experiments are bad, they certainly are not.  It’s like in physics when you were testing to see the effects of inertia; every time the magnetic train slid the way you wanted it to, it wasn’t necessarily groundbreaking, but it still felt good when it happened.

Field Music sound like The Electric Light Orchestra, even down to the plunky piano parts and the weird, moogie synth sounds.  Lead singers/brothers, Dave and Peter Brewis do adequate jobs, but they definitely aren’t going to win any Mariah Carey  Awards for insanely wide (and obnoxious) vocal range.  Their reined in vocals are reminescent of the good side of prog rock, and in no way is there ever any sort of homage to Neal Pert.

So, I guess if you’re into being a dungeon master, if you’ve got the high score on Galaga on the machine in the Shopko Strip mall (next to the little professor), then this could be  your next big thing.  Practice up on the air drums, you’ll need it.

Featured Track:  A Gap Has been Found.  Starts off with sort-of-classical piano and a full string section.  It quickly forges into a mid tempo rocker with multiple vocal tracks, hand claps, and a drummer that loves splash cymbals.  It ends with a Queen-esque vocal orgy, so that’s something neat.
